Doing It All Yourself

“The most dangerous kind of waste is the waste we do not recognize.” – Shigeo Shingo

You Are Not a Robot!

Series 1, Episode 1: DOING IT ALL YOURSELF

TL;DR Summary

You don’t have to do everything or make every business decision on your own.

  • Letting go goes a long way.

  • Delegation is your friend. Whether that means hiring your first employees or investing in software, your business will only start making money once you offload some of your responsibilities onto other qualified shoulders.

  • Get or ask for support. Not every solution comes with a price tag.

You realize that doing it all yourself is a poor decision pretty early on in the entrepreneurial experience. Most people cite money as the reason they do not invest in help or support. Others deny it has anything to do with their inability to delegate effectively or build processes and systems. The simple fact is that a business is only as strong as the leader's ability to:

  • Manage their time and focus their energy on what matters most.

  • Relinquish control in some areas and trust others.

  • Identify and let go of tasks and roles they do not perform well or have little time to successfully carry through.

  • Establish a diverse team with complementary skill sets, the right attitude, and values aligned with their business.

  • Recognize that if done alone; there is a greater potential to mismanage certain aspects of the business, whether it be business operations, hiring, or marketing.

Working alone tends to make us set in our ways. Sometimes it is wise to work with someone who will be able to see your blind spots, identify potential opportunities, and spot potential roadblocks. Have you ever had a company audit? How about a business spend audit? An IT and technology assessment? Often, you can get these kinds of services for free! The experience helps you learn where improvements can be made and will help you plan out how and when to make changes.

You see, there is always a way to move your business forward and create opportunities for future success with other people, software, or tools, and many of them don’t cost you a dime. Oftentimes, you just need to know where to look.
